Get involved

Fancy getting involved with something different? Then why not apply to be a volunteer at the Roman Circus Centre?

The Archaeological Trust is a registered charity. The Centre is not subsidised or grant-aided in any way and we don’t charge admission for entry because we want it to be free for all. Funds are ultra-short and we rely on volunteers to play a big part in the development and running of the Circus Centre (which they most certainly do!).

Currently about 20 people volunteer on a regular basis at the centre. Most  give a few hours in a morning or afternoon each week. Some people give more. Most have been working with us for years. They love it and we love to have them here! But despite all their hard work, there is still loads to do and perhaps you are somebody who could help?

The sorts of things you might like to consider doing are:

  • work with the archaeologists sorting, washing and marking archaeological finds (you’ll get some training and guidance)
  • gardening in and around the circus remains cutting the grass, strimming, weeding and looking after flower beds
  • scraping and redecorating walls
  • general diy work around the centre
  • acting as a guide for visitors (you’ll get training and guidance)

If you have specialised skills to offer such as computing or carpentry, we would of course be very pleased to hear from you. And if you are a student, you might like to help out during your holidays on a voluntary basis especially if you are thinking about studying archaeology at university.

(On the downside though, we can’t offer you the chance to work on an excavation – at least not normally. This is because we work for developers and builders on a commercial basis where we need to field archaeologists who are trained and experienced.)

So you are interested to get involved – what next? The best thing for you to do is pay us a visit. We will show you around and together we can see if there is something you might like to try. Simply send us a message using our contact form telling us when you would like to come and we will get in touch pronto!
